MC Lyte’s Lyte As A Rock Released 30 Years Ago Today

MC Lyte’s name doesn’t come up often enough when we talk about trailblazers of hip-hop. The Brooklyn bar-smith was the first solo female to ever release a full length rap album. That album, Lyte As A Rock was released 30 years ago today.

The album is not only worth mentioning because of its historical significant but in its quality too as it earned critical acclaim upon release. While there are no credited features on Lyte As A Rock, Prince Paul and Audio Two are notable names on production.

Lyte As A Rock peaked at 50 in Billboard’s US Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums chart.
