Gig Guide: Kay Greyson, The Great & The Magnificent & Twist Helix

“Nothing ever happens in Newcastle” cry many Geordie muso’s. When in fact, the opposite can be said about the entire North East of England. There’s always something going on – you just need to know where to look. Fortunately, TheRootMusic knows where to look for the best gigs going down around Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas. Here’s a guide to the most appealing gigs this week:

Born Lippy @ Cobalt Studios (Thursday 11th January 2018)
For the second instalment of spoken word / poetry night, Donald Jenkins’ ‘Born Lippy’ has switched venues to Cobalt Studios. Hosted by Donald Jenkins, Sarah Jane and Tom C, the event looks to mix performance poetry with hip-hop and comedy. ‘Born Lippy’ has a stacked line up including Pauly Belter, Aidan Clarke, Kay Greyson, Kirsten Luckins and Simon Donald in addition to a poetry slam.

Macmillan Fundraiser @ The Cluny (Sunday 14th January 2018)
It’s always nice to give to Charity but sometimes its good to get a little incentive. For music lovers in and around Newcastle, the Ouseburn’s The Cluny is hosting a fundraiser for Macmillan that boasts a brilliant line up. With Penguin, Martha Hill, Twist Helix, A Man Called Paris, Adam Littlemore and The Great & The Magnificent all included, there’s a little something for everyone. We’re most excited for hip-hop duo The Great & The Magnificent, who always give 100000% to their stage performances.

Next week: Scouse Trappin Tremz, Tees Grime Fam and Lugz & Dredz
