Gig Guide: Clean Bandit, Born Lippy & Akala

“Nothing ever happens in Newcastle” cry many Geordie muso’s. When in fact, the opposite can be said about the entire North East of England. There’s always something going on – you just need to know where to look. Fortunately, TheRootMusic knows where to look for the best gigs going down around Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas. Here’s a guide to the most appealing gigs this week:

Clean Bandit @ o2 Academy Newcastle (Monday 6th November)
Grammy award winning trio Clean Bandit bring their infectious genre-defying bangers to the o2 Academy Newcastle on Monday night. Having a slew of charting singles over the years, ‘Rockabye’ proved to be especially successful for them spending several weeks at number one in the official UK charts. For a night of non-stop anthems, Clean Bandit are a must-see.

Born Lippy @ Arch Sixteen Cafe (Wednesday 8th November)

One of the North East’s most beloved intimate venues Arch Sixteen is home to a number of exciting events including From The Hip and ObScene. Born Lippy is a new poetry-centred event to add to the list with performances from Scott Tyrrell, Drop Dead Fred, Front Step Collective, Donald Jenkins and more. There’s also a slam poetry competition to add the cherry on top of the icing on the cake.

DJ Format & Abdominal @ The Georgian Theatre (Wednesday 8th November)
After a successful tour last year, DJ Format & Abdominal are back in the UK to promote the release of their debut collaborative album. ‘Still Hungry’ has received support from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne and enjoyed chart success in the iTunes top 10 and hitting number one on Bandcamp. In the second half of their 2017 UK tour, the hip-hop duo are performing in cities and town’s many entertainers miss out, including Stockton this Wednesday.

Akala @ World Headquarters (Thursday 9th November)
UK hip-hop legend Akala is known for his political, socially conscious raps which is often mistaken for a too-serious live set. This isn’t the case for the London rapper. Having experienced Akala’s performance at Riverside last year, he’s as encapsulating as any other hip-hop performer I’ve seen live. Given the political climate since the snap election, I’d fully expect a few wise words spoken in World Headquarters on Thursday night.

The Killers @ Metro Radio Arena (Friday 10th November)
Legendary rock band The Killers ruled the mid-2000’s with the inescapable millenial anthem ‘Mr. Brightside’ alongside ‘When We Were Young’ and ‘Somebody Told Me.’ They’re back in 2017 with a new album, and a tour to promote ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ their fifth opus.

Module @ o2 Academy Newcastle (Saturday 11th November)
With support from Icarus & Kideko and Danny Howard headlining, the forthcoming edition of Module looks set to be a madness. Promoted as ‘House Music All Night Long’, this massive event at the o2 Academy Newcastle is an absolute must attend for any dance music aficionados.

Next Week: Insane Clown Posse, Rex Regis, Callum Pitt, James Arthur, Astroid Boys.
