Gig Guide: Summer Punch Ball @ Riverside

There’s something about the simplistic but tight branding around the Summer Punch Ball that brings me unrivalled joy. Every promotional post packed with some sort of fruit-based pun is almost enough to convince me to get to Riverside on Saturday 12th August. A quick glance of the line-up and it doesn’t take much more convincing.

The Punch Bowl consists of a strong line up of local bands who have been making waves throughout the UK. With headliners Avalanche Party joined by the likes of Coquin Migale, A Festival, A Parade and Penguin amongst others. Here at TheRootMusic however, we’re more interested in The Garden Stage.

Hip-hop in the North East appears to be gaining more attention from the rest of the local scene than it’s had for a long time. Finally attracting the respect it deserves. Amongst the acts repping for the rappers, and personal pick to deliver a stand-out performance at the event is Sagaboi. Backed by Eljai’s production, Sagaboi is one of the freshest rap artists to emerge from the local circuit for some time. After a stripped back set at ObSceNE open mic night, I’m looking forward to see him in full festival mode.

After shutting down the Evolution Emerging 2017 afterparty together, Kay Greyson and Xaatu are also on the bill for the Garden Stage. Unfortunately Boro barsmith Jister has had to cancel his performance, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a replacement, even if the ‘JTLR’ rappers’ shoes are big to fill.

If all of the live acts aren’t enough for you, there’s plenty more going on too. Check out the Facebook event page for more details.
