Gig Review: SoShe Headline Tynemouth Surf Cafe

In the past year or so, SoShe have been quietly building up their fan base supporting an array of artists including Akala, Devlin and J Hus. With only one single in the form of the Cadet assisted ‘Showed Up’, they’ve not headlined a gig in about a year. On Friday 9th, the three-piece urban band headlined Tynemouth Surf Cafe and absolutely smashed it.

Opening up, BSLG, Arid Fool, J-Man and Ken Masters took part in a rap cypher, expertly maneuvering through beat switch ups mid-flow and bringing an infectious energy to a crowd that may have been unfamiliar with them. Each of them brought something a little different to one another, BSLG brought a fresh faster paced flow synonymous with grime and trap whilst Arid Fool delivered his story-telling terrifically. UK hip-hop veterans J-Man and Ken Masters brought in a range of freestyles many of which aimed at Theresa May and the General Election which had raged on the night before.

In between the performers, Craig Dalziel, also known as Dap CEO, curated a DJ set which segued between the rap cypher into the headlining stars of the show. Mixing tracks from The Weeknd, Travis Scott and more, Dalziel displayed a deft knowledge in how to warm the crowd up for SoShe.

As ever, SoShe delivered. Having seen their support performances a number of times already, I wasn’t surprised by the bands’ capability to deliver a commanding performance. Running through fan favourites including ‘Something About The Way’ and ‘Showed Up’ but also the stripped back ‘Even In My Dreams.’ The latter showcased frontwoman Dayna’s phenomenal vocal abilities, and showcased versatility in the musicality provided by Alex on guitar and Jaimie on drums.

There’s obviously a demand for more SoShe shows too. The band sold out Tynemouth Surf Cafe with ease, and the atmosphere inside of the coastal venue was electric. Fans were singing along to songs that aren’t yet released and screaming not only “one more song” but “one more set” by the time the night drew to a close.

Tune into TheRootMusic on Spark on Monday 19th June 2017 for a special show focused on SoShe. You can listen in on 107FM across Wearside or on around the world.
