Swiss: Nigger (Review)

———————————————————————————
The biggest song in the UK right now, is a surprising one. Giving this years trend of ‘bangers’ which are perfectly enjoyable, but do little to give a message, seeing Swiss‘ social commentary on the ever controversial ‘n-word’ doing the rounds of social media is warmly welcomed as a pleasant change to the script.
As a Caucasian male, I often feel that certain curators of urban music tend to play the victim in terms of racial divide too much. Not to say racism doesn’t exist, ofcourse it does, and I witness it daily. But, they often fight racism with reverse-racism and that only makes them as bad as the people they’re criticising.
Swiss brings a refreshing, matter-of-fact articulation of the racism in the world. Exposing seemingly simple terms such as ‘black mail’, ‘black market’ and ‘black listed’, as using the colour to express negativity and it’s something I’ve never thought much about before. In this dedication to Mark Duggan, “Nigger” is the best song of 2014, and perhaps beyond, purely because it’s educational, eye-opening and musically engaging without any patronising or exaggerations.
